Negotiate like a Pro – Quick List of Negotiating Tips

Most people don’t like to negotiate – studies have shown that negotiation is the main  reason women receive less pay when compared to men in the workplace.  Negotiation does not always have to be sneaky or intimidating – especially if you know certain techniques.  Organizations want to know how well you can negotiate because this ability will serve the organizational cause in the future – If you are poor at negotiating then you will be perceived as a liability to the company and receive less money in the process.  Below are a few solid techniques to aid you in your development of negotiating skills and to earning a greater degree of respect from the other side.

  • Negotiations are time-bound and 80% of the action happens during the final 20% of the time
  • Strategy: Create additional demands during the final 20% of time to increase pressure
  • Enter negotiations with a full understanding of what you are willing to accept
  • Bring your requirements along with a list of unreasonable requests to create camouflage
  • Each side likes to win points and these unreasonable requests will serve you well during the final portion of negotiation
  • Make them seem important and do not show your hand – they will allow you to achieve your goal
  • Give up your unreasonable requests late in the negotiation so the other side will get a win and you could exchange for something important
  • Watch body language to see if it aligns with what is being said verbally – misalignment means a bluff or lie

Stay patient – Patience Wins

Lead with Purpose

Mother Teresa, Gandhi, The Pope, Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, all the great leaders in the stories that we have learned from are unique but not dissimilar to us.

Most people have the ability to be this great – Greatness is in the core of us all.  We are all born with similar traits that allow us to be great when we are ready to seize the opportunity.

Most people never take the opportunity because they either fear the unknown or lack enough confidence.  People hold themselves back – They don’t take the chances because they don’t understand their strengths.  Unfortunately, most people sadly follow the road that is dictated to them instead of dictating their own path in life.

How many people do you know that have followed in their father’s footsteps?

Why is not taking charge a common theme?

It’s not easy to make a choice – Most people won’t – Its hard making critical decisions – most people don’t have the confidence.  Choices are made for them instead of making choices for themselves.  It is safer to follow the crowd than to go alone into the unknown.

We praise our leaders because of their courage and because of their choices.  This greatness that we admire is in all of us – Same DNA, same human abilities, same mental structure.

The difference is the self-awareness of understanding strengths, recognizing weaknesses, and an ability to overcome fear.  Once these are recognized you can make your own decisions.

People are afraid to make the change – it becomes uncomfortable thinking about the unknown future – we try to create certainty.  Abraham Lincoln was the master of paradox and enshrined as one of the greatest leaders of all-time – we all have the ability to face fear and live in the paradox – most of us don’t have the courage to do it.

Why don’t we? What causes barriers?

Is it fear or uncertainty avoidance? Is it the need for safety?

History says if you don’t change you die – Evolution says you have to adapt to the new situation

I say, Lead with purpose, prevent problems by reacting before they happen instead of afterwards.  Don’t be a yes-man and follow the crowd – have a voice, be valuable, live your life the way you want.

What is Business and why does it exist?

The common perception of business people and economists is that…

“Business exists to make a profit” – “Business is driven by profit” – “Profit”.

Is “profit” the real reason business exists?

Maybe in a vacuum, but let’s take a broader view of the situation…

Does Apple exist to make a profit?

Does Amazon exist to make a profit?

Or… is profit the benefit or feedback they receive for providing excellent products and services?

Does your iPad sit on your desk so Apple can make a profit?

Or… does your iPad sit on your desk to provide a service that improves the quality of your life?

Here is the answer to the title:

Business is a function that exists to provide quality products and services to improve the quality of life for society at large”.

Business serves an important function in everyone’s life and provides products and services that fill in gaps that enable society to exist better today than they did yesterday.

Sometimes, business is viewed as evil because strategies are based on gaining profit for providing products and services.

Business is based on competition – the winner is determined based on who creates the most wanted product and/or service.

Where would we be today without the function of business?

Business is critical for the success of society and an economy’s strength is predicated on the success of its businesses.

Some people look down on business because the stereotype is that business people are cut-throats who aim to win at all costs.

Business competition does attract these types of people and stories are written about these select few because of the emotions that are triggered – they sell newspapers.

On the other hand, people get into business because they want to better society and provide products that help people live a better quality of life.

Compete – Develop – Provide a Service – Provide a Product – Improve the quality of Life

“Before” and “After”

“What you don’t know – you don’t know”

Sometimes this removes responsibility but limits us to living below our potential

Knowledge is power when used and this process includes a few key steps

Once the internal motivation is prepared the spark of change and development begins

This needs to be paired with external encouragement that fuels the burning fire

The “Before”: is a shell without content – A frame without a picture

The “After” is: is a finely tuned machine that has the ability to conquer new opportunities

A beautiful picture of wholeness and success

Below is a short video that outlines the transformation from “Before” to “After”

Escape from Freedom?

Escape Freedom?

Normally we think of freedom as a concept we cling to for dear life instead of flee from, but Dr. Eric Fromm theorized that people escape from personal freedoms in order to feel secure.  Dr. Fromm determined that freedom is a central theme within human nature (Boeree, 2006).  Escaping freedom involves three processes that include clinging rigidly to an authoritarianism structural view of society which provides a source of stability and correctness that creates a foundation for determining clear correct decisions.  The second process is Self-destructive behaviors that effect everyone connected – Suicide is the most extreme form of destructiveness (Boeree, 2006). The third process of running from freedom is called automaton conformity.  Dr. Erich Fromm coined automaton conformity which describes individuals that hide like a chameleon behind their culture in a society of equality.

These behaviors are possibly learned from cultural history which involved conforming to the ruling power – Waiting to be told what to do instead of being proactive and creating innovation.  Current society possesses the ability to implement innovation and are encouraged to do so which is in great contrast to the majority of human history.  These ideas are presented to increase self-awareness concerning behaviors – Do you ever find yourself running from freedom? Hopefully, this will provide a new perspective for understanding the underlying reasons why people hold on rigidly to old beliefs.  We have the ability to break free of the limiting beliefs that have been passed down and create a new awareness that empowers us to be the leaders of our own lives.

Boeree, C. G., (2006) Personality theories

Multi-rater Feedback 360° Performance Feedback in Action

Multi-rater 360°

Self-awareness is defined as knowing self-behaviors as others see them.  Most individuals have an incomplete view of how they are perceived by their peers, subordinates, and superiors which creates miscommunication that corrupts the synergy and climate of the working environment.  The main goal of the multi-rater 360° is for the improvement of overall organizational performance which is derived through skills, competencies, and behaviors of its associates.  The 360° tool collects behavioral perceptions from trusted associates usually from different ranks within an organization and measures components of leadership effectiveness.  The extracted action-based feedback is leveraged to implement goal setting to improve leadership abilities by identifying weaknesses and illuminating strengths in regards to executive decision making, strategic planning, communications, and corporate management to name a few. The multiple benefits of a multi-rater 360° improve the organizational climate by creating leadership awareness as well as providing necessary feedback about behavioral processes that negatively impact company output.

These tools are integral for providing immediate change to adverse behaviors and positively influence the work atmosphere by directly improving organizational communications.  The multi-rater 360° tool’s anonymous structure provides a platform for honest feedback that is extremely valuable which targets important areas of concern and improving these areas exponentially provides a return on investment for any organization.  Implementing a multi-rater 360° is a flexible process that provides a clear view of overall behavioral self-performance which includes an array of associate perspectives as well as the self-perspective.  The multi-rater 360° is used from top to bottom in most organizations and not everyone receives glowing reviews of behavioral performance which causes dissonance for many affected associates.

The common denominations of results are organized as follows: Top twenty percent (20%), bottom twenty percent (20%), and middle sixty percent (60%).  The top twenty percent of participants are satisfied with the results and excited to find out that they have been perceived by others as they recognize themselves.  The bottom twenty percent are confused and upset about receiving terrible results – They feel horrible for taking part in the assessment and are at odds with the results.  These emotional feelings direct participants to search for alternative reasons or excuses to explain the unwanted outcome.  The middle sixty percent of participants have received a mixture of positive and negative feedback, and are unsure about how to direct their energy to improve their work perception.  This is a valuable resource for the organization to leverage because increasing the leader behaviors in the middle sixty percent of the organization can create an overwhelming momentum that will turn an average organization into the number one (#1) or number two (#2) organization in their respective fields.

 Multi-rater 360° Executive Coaching

Several different research studies have shown that professional executive coaching has improved the outcomes associated with multi-rater 360° tools and the control groups without professional coaching received no improvement (Luthans & Peterson, 2003; Seifert, Yukl, & McDonald, 2003; Smither, London, Flautt, Vargas, & Kucine, 2003).  Executive coaching provides direction and clarity around feedback and removes the false underlying beliefs that are created when receiving unfavorable results.  Executive coaching provides a sounding board and a professionally skilled support system for the participant to express their true feelings associated with the 360° feedback in real-time.  This coaching experience improves the ability to understand the positive and negative feedback because the emotional connection is addressed and removed which empowers potential leaders to make considerable change for correction.  Research has shown that the alternative to this solution is doing nothing about the results which leaves an unresolved gap for the participant.  The multi-rater 360° tool is the catalyst that starts the sequence of change, but action-based coaching that focuses on strategic goals supported by a coaching relationship are the foundation for positive developmental change.  The executive coach co-creates action plans to implement change that addresses the feedback and provides a platform for the leader to address their development over time.  The coaching platform creates a safe confidential zone for the client to identify hidden elements associated with the feedback and to understand the dynamics pertaining to the work environment.

Multi-rater 360° tools are most successful when used for developmental purposes rather than performance evaluation because the latter introduces incentives that create confounding variables that produce null and void feedback that is free of non-basis perception.  This learning opportunity that exponentially supports the participant and the organization will then be transformed into a strategic moment to target perceived competition and create a toxic working environment.  Alternatively, multi-rater 360° tools can be applied to selection and development of high-potential leadership candidates because these tools are ideal at identifying important leadership competencies that have been shown to make dramatic differences between success and failure at the highest levels.  Furthermore, multi-rater 360° tools are strategically effective for implementing positive team-building.

Communication

Clear communication concerning the desired implementation and expectations associated with a Multi-rater 360° tool are imperative to the success of the operation.  Uncertainty about the motivation behind this assessment can lead to false positives and negatives which ultimately confounds the results.  A presentation concerning the success goals and the impact will greatly aid the organizational buy-in which creates an atmosphere of trust.  This will lead to greater participation and satisfaction associated with the experiential experience.  Team members become increasingly aware of their responsibility to provide honest actionable feedback to help support their organization’s overall success as well as the individual they are responsible for rating.  A well planned Multi-rater 360° experience improves group efficacy and collaboration that leads to greater synergy.

Feedback

Receiving feedback that is unexpected or does not align with firmly held beliefs about how pointed behaviors and actions are perceived causes cognitive dissonance.  The feelings and emotions that are stirred up during this process causes mental confusion for some participants and can be handled poorly during the wrong situations.  Leaders know how to handle adversity and understand how to control their reactions.  Confident Leaders use their intellect to take everything into consideration and collect their thoughts concerning the feedback process.  Leaders then respond accordingly through their positive actions to improve the circumstances that caused the unfavorable feedback – leaders lead by example.  The multi-rater 360° tool is a measure of leadership competencies, and most importantly, accurately measures the competency of self-awareness.  The multi-rater 360° tool’s accuracy involves multiple layers of perspectives which are honest by way of anonymity.  The gift of the Multi-rater 360° tool is that of actionable goals for personal and professional development in relation to the related work environment.

Feedback should never be given in malice, but rather, in a supportive fashion that benefits overall development.   The ideal feedback would support the individual competencies in relation to company strategy, vision, and mission.  A proper Multi-rater 360° debrief should include professional coaching that aids in the development of the individual in regards to expanding their role in the organization through additional training and job rotations.  Participating in a Multi-rater 360° exercise is a privilege and identifies the commitment that the organization has to progressive development.  These tools are designed to improve leadership competencies and provide individual data for improving the unlimited potential that truly exist in everyone – The goal is to discover strengths, face reality concerning behaviors, and exploit the learning experience to improve personally and professionally.

The Professional Coaching Process Explained

The ORID model is revolutionary and is the next step in the evolution of communication. This coaching model is a coach’s best friend because it identifies the correct process to enable the client to expand on their inner potential. Awareness and motivation are critical elements to seizing success in personal and professional encounters. We believe that there is no such thing as a dead-end and there is always a possibility to win when there is a present unstoppable will. Our clients overcome extreme adversity and we have the endurance to support against any odds. We implement strategic tools and logic to expand the field of view concerning all situations. The ORID provides a great system to improve communication between the coach and elite associate. Coaching skills such as active listening and powerful questions enable the professional coach to take this tool to a higher level and a lesser qualified coach would not be able to manage the above tool effectively.

The ORID diagram seems complex and difficult to interpret, but the following will explain the complicated terms in clearer detail. The O in ORID stands for observation which is code for understanding the background information concerning specific client situations. Background information is important for understand current and future situations. A qualified professional coach knows how to understand the content that is being communicated. There are hidden messages that a competent coach can pick up on and create awareness for their client. If done correctly, this feedback can be greatly influential in the client’s life.

The R in ORID stands for reflective which concerns understanding the feelings and emotions associated with the background information. A skilled coach will move effortlessly between these two categories and can maneuver back and forth gathering background information mixed with the associated feelings. The ORID box is extremely important because it identifies when discomfort is created – A lesser skilled coach will unknowingly create discomfort during the coaching process because they are unaware of the critical rules of communication. Trust is incredibly important when exploring feelings and emotions when supporting a client during this experience. Comfort and safety associated with privacy and confidentiality during the coaching process is essential in understanding all connected elements. True empathy is omnipotent in these situations and a born to be coach will posses this ability.

The I in ORID stands for Interpretive which concerns a full understanding of the previous two categories of O and R plus a focus on co-creating strategic solutions to improve current and future situations. A common mistake of inexperienced coaches is to cross the center and jump to decisions from feelings or from solutions back to background information. These jumps cause discomfort and skew the coaching relationship because mistrust is unconsciously created. When the coach has safely guided their client to the solutions stage there is a synergy that is growingly powerful. The momentum to overcome obstacles is fierce and the client begins to establish new growth that leads to greater accomplishment. This stage provides a clear-minded platform for expert brainstorming that magnifies client abilities to think strategically from multiple perspectives. The coaching feedback during this stage is extremely beneficial for the client because it signals that they are on the right page and reinforces their motivation to succeed – Sounds great huh.

The D in ORID stands for Decisions and this is the fourth category that has the task of capturing the momentum of the previous three categories. This is the mental arena where the client puts the optimum solution into practice and owns the process. This firmly empowers the client to take action in their lives to improve their position by making decisions that are free of false underlying beliefs that create arresting emotions that inhibit appropriate action. The coach guides the process and the client controls the content – The coach empowers the client through the coaching process and the client embraces the opportunity to reach their ultimate potential. An ongoing coaching engagement provides a constant platform for the client to interact with a professional coach. This provides the ability to reflect on progress or various factors that limit progressive action. This is a time to gain a deeper understanding about issues, circumstances, decisions, beliefs, and to brag about reaching previously unrealized goals faster than could possibly be conceived. This experience is what professional coaches live for and witnessing the development of clients is the greatest gift that the coach could receive. What is Leadership Development?

What is Leadership Development?

Leadership development is an activity that enhances Leadership ability within the defined leadership situation which concerns developing individuals through different developmental exercises.  The myth associated with leadership is that it is developed from inborn traits, but the truth behind the mystery of Leadership is that this unique ability is learned.  The art of leadership is based on a large-scale of traits that no one individual can possibly encompass, although, there are high potential individuals that possess many leadership factors that contribute to success at the highest level.  Identifying strengths and enhancing those well-defined abilities is integral to enhancing overall leadership ability and organizational psychologist have spent many decades deciphering the leadership code.

There are multiple factors that combine to form the personality of a leader.  Not all great leaders are developed equally; to the contrary, most great leaders are drastically different from one another.  Personality traits, emotional intelligence, social intelligence, self-awareness, and instinctual factors conjoin to form the prominent behaviors of esteemed leaders.  Leadership is difficult and requires a well-trained individual to handle the immense responsibility.  Everyone wants to be the highly respected leader, but no one wants the responsibility that comes with the position.  This increases the difficulty associated with being a competent leader because of the difficulty associated with getting buy-in from followers.  A leader is merely an individual with followers and there is no such thing as a leader without followers.

Overall awareness concerning leadership requirements an all important first step that prevents averse communications that hinder relationship growth between leaders and followers.  Transferring the appropriate knowledge to high potential leaders is essential for leadership success and accurate translation of leadership knowledge into action can greatly increase the aptitude of a respective organization.  Distinct leadership abilities begin with the inner self – Self-awareness, self-control, high self-monitoring, an internal locus of control, and most importantly, the motivation to be the leader.  No one can become a great leader without the motivation to be a leader – Warner Burke.

Executive Leadership Coaching

Transferring of leadership knowledge has been identified in several circumstances which include action learning, mentoring, multi-rater feedback, and more specifically, executive coaching.   Multi-rater feedback has been shown in multiple research articles to be more effective with the implementation of executive coaching.  Mentoring is a wonderful tool that transfers the ability to operate within a specific organizational culture, but lacks the confidential non-bias environment that is needed for true leadership development.  Professional executive coaching provides this monumental approach to leadership development by infusing action learning and executive coaching together to expedite the developmental process.

High potential leaders are promoted for being technically great at what they do in regards to operations in certain niche areas.  They have proved their worth to their organization by showing their dedication, work ethic, and high integrity when it comes to company functions.  They have shown their ability to execute under stressful circumstances and have excelled by providing the highest quality of work.  Their managerial abilities were exceptional and their successful operational style influenced positive overall group processes.  They have learned to take on increased responsibility and have shown their ability to succeed as leaders.  The developmental next step in the career game is to climb the hierarchical ladder to the next level which involves leading a larger amount of associates, increased responsibility, and relinquished control over multiple situations.  This extreme decrease in control is counter-intuitive which creates a damaging effect on the overall behavior of most leaders who are used to having full control.  The new enlarged leadership position now places different demands on the leader which causes them to change their operational methods from a command and control style into a persuasive style that leverages the strengths of group associates to accomplish greater tasks.

This behavioral transformation takes great effort and should not be underestimated.  Leadership development requires a skilled executive coach that understands the emotional rollercoaster involved with the leadership process as described above.  A successful coach-leader relationship will exponentially increase the learning curve needed to become a great leader.  The amount of time, money, frustration, damaged relationships, and more that are saved through investing in an executive coach during the leadership development process is priceless.
