We all have the power of choice. Choice is an essential gift. We all make impulsive choices based on emotions paired with poor judgment. The choices we made yesterday have led to our present situation. We cannot go back in time and change what we did or how we did it.

We cannot dwell on something that cannot be changed. We need to focus on our choices today and how they will impact tomorrow.

We need to build positive momentum moving forward. Regardless if the economy is holding you down or your friends betrayed your trust. We could blame anything and everything for our situation, but that won’t help us move forward with positive momentum. We need to cut the dead weight of blame, collect the essential pieces that are left with us today, and start making choices that will make tomorrow a better place.

What one thing could you do that will create something positive for you tomorrow?

What do you want to happen in your future?

I heard a story about: scared money doesn’t win and it reminded me of brilliant people who preach – Give Back, Pay it Forward, What goes around comes around, Reciprocity, Karma.

Do favors for others that could do favors for you. When they say thank you, don’t say, “Don’t worry about it” or “No problem, anytime” [You’re discounting your favor].

You should instead say, “You would do the same for me”.

Try switching your language and watch the response. People have an inner need to repay favors because it makes us feel good. We want an opportunity to help back. Allow the people you take care of to take care of you too. Give and ye shall receive.

It’s human nature.

Professional Coaching Explained

We briefly discuss the difference between coaching and consulting, difference between non-certified coaching and certified coaching, the importance of having a professional coach, why coaching is essential for client development, what a client should bring to the coaching engagement, what the concept of professional coaching is all about, coaching and action learning, and lastly, the beauty of awareness and clear communication derived from professional coaching.

Coaching is not Consulting

Coaching doesn’t provide answers.

Coaching enables you to develop the answer that is right for you.

Industry knowledge is not mandatory for coaching.

However, it allows for clear dialogue, more comfort, and faster progress.

Information doubles every forty-eight hours.

There are choices for choices!

What you do today shapes your future.

Making the correct choices has a huge impact on your life.

A career needs to be crafted correctly.

A wrong choice can cause lost years, reduced income, and a lower quality of living standard.

Coaching is a badge of honor that shows you are ready to take action for more achievement.

All high achievers employ professional coaches to guide them to be their very best.

Coaching is about taking action, understanding the moment, and leveraging strengths for improved success.

Coaching does not dwell on past problems, but rather, takes the positives and learned experience and uses it to create new perceptions.

Not everyone can benefit from coaching.

A client has to bring traits with them to the coaching engagement.

A few traits for optimum results are as follows:

  1. Motivated to get better
  2. Interested in learning about themselves
  3. Open to taking measured chances
  4. Ready to change negative behaviors
  5. Ready to create goals and commit to them

Professional coaching is an investment in yourself and if you feel that you are better than your performance says then acquiring a certified professional coach is exactly what you need to get to the next level.

Not all coaching is created equal

There are many practicing coaches that are not formally trained in the art of coaching.

Anyone who has had experience with a certified coach and a non-certified coach could tell you the difference.

The difference concerns the approach to the relationship, the structure of engagement, the non-judgmental behavior of the coach, and more production from the client because of the high regard a certified coach has for their clients.

There is a certain type of education that enhances the coaching ability in regards to mental acuity, expert listening, and perspective shifting, understanding the power of questions, and respecting the expertise of the client.

Non-certified coaches bring a different self-created practice to the coaching engagement that incorporates a little bit of consultant and therapist which creates discomfort and increasingly contributes to the lack of attaining goals.

Coaching and Action Learning

Action learning is a fairly new concept in organizations that has been developed through sensitive research on Adult Learning and Leadership. Visualizing the action inoculates us to the experience – studies have shown that performance is elevated similarly when physically doing and visualizing the experience.

Coaching creates a comfortable confidential space where the client taps into this world with a trusted guide and operates subconsciously to get better at their specific craft. The client has already accomplished their objective in their mind when the time comes to physically perform and will succeed to the best of their ability because of the coaching engagement.

Coaching is Revolutionary

Professional coaching is a revolutionary way of communicating and the evolution of our development has created a medium to advance our performance. Positive psychology is tapping into the art of coaching and adapting it further for additional benefits. Professional coaching is here to stay and currently a multi-billion dollar industry. Our clients leave our engagement with new found awareness and amazement of the beauty of seeing clearly. Our way of life goes so fast that we fail to absorb its beauty and forget the basics that make life worth living.  This is a common theme in most of our lives because we are only human and only able to take in on average seven bits of information per second.  Being thankful for what we have is challenging when we see all the things we don’t have. The vividness of your life is very beautiful when you realize what is really there in front of you.

Powerful Influence of Positive Words

Sticks and stones can break my bones but words will never hurt me – Wrong!

Yeah sticks and stones break bones but words can definitely hurt.

Perception is the key, and our bodies react to positive and negative words – seriously!

Our body is made up of between 55% and 78% water.

Dr. Masuru Emoto conducted a scientific study which showed that negative words disfigured the structure of water molecules, and positive words transformed water molecules into beautiful shapes (i.e. snow crystals).

Words affect our behavior and we have control over the words that we use and allow into our lives – we have the ability to shape our environment and ultimately we have control over how we want our bodies to feel.

Bottom Line

Increase your body’s positive interaction with your environment by putting more positive words around you – this will transform 55-78% of your body into beautiful molecules which will positively affect your overall mood.

What are a few positive words that make you feel great?

Try it – it works!

Ladder of Inference – Creating Effective Communication in Organizations

The Ladder of Inference was created by Chris Argyris and Donald Schon in 1974 and has been used to accurately diagnose human interactions. The Ladder of Inference concerns human interaction and every step of the ladder creates additional distortion regarding the situation derived from misguided beliefs and misunderstandings.  Inferences are learned information concerning the behaviors of others derived from previous interactions with the people in question or people who we feel are similar to the target audience.

The Ladder of Inference has seven rungs that begin with data and observable behavior concerning the immediate experience. The second step includes perceived data derived from the interaction that starts communication distortion because our input is fallible. We need to become aware at this initial step of our input in order to avoid miscommunication but the unconscious process happens spontaneously and is difficult to control without deliberate practice.  Step two incorporates the added cultural and personal beliefs associated with the communication topic.

Step three concerns the assumptions based on the added information and how we make sense of the situation using the real data and the self-created data.  The self-created data interferes with clear communication because the two or more parties are not privy to the equal information that is being used to dissect the interactive communication.  Step four is an interpretive development where communication is combined with personal assumptions that impose meanings that might not be accurate or true.

Step five brings all previous information together to form a final conclusion about the interactive situation which lends its findings to step six where new beliefs about the world are formed.  These new beliefs or inferences are then applied to future situations or interactions that concern communication.  This decisional area transforms information into long-term memory and creates a concrete view formed by this unconscious process. The seventh and final step concerns taking action based on the newly formed beliefs about the world and social interactions.

We all use the Ladder of Inference to form our beliefs about the world and take action based on these beliefs.  The process happens unconsciously and happens at different rates of speed for different people.  Usually, the pace up the ladder is instantaneous and we need to become fully aware of the inputs that are going into forming our final concrete beliefs in order to accurately assess the situation and the world around us.

Understanding the Ladder of Inference reduces conflict – aids in a mutual understanding concerning social points of view.  The ladder of inference identifies the human unconscious ability to immediately loop information up the progressive ladder to reach conclusions based on the perceived information concerning the people involved. This model is based on cognitive shortcuts concerning behaviors, traits, awareness, knowledge, and beliefs that concern the interpretation of the surrounding world. A manager needs to be aware of the steps in the Ladder of Inference in order to effectively communicate and understand co-workers which would enable correct action under stressful circumstances.  Part of becoming self-aware is centered in guiding others to understand their Ladder of Inference using powerful questions concerning behaviors, beliefs about other people, and the situation.  The benefit of using this model to operate is based on putting the effort in the front end to reduce problems and communication conflict on the back-end which promotes better work production and the savings of time exponentially increases with effective communication derived from the use and internal understanding of the Ladder of Inference model.

Awareness concerning the Ladder of Inference in Career coaching positively impacts social intelligence in the workplace for leadership, management, and high potential associates.  Communication in the workplace is always in need of constant repair because of our internal processes.  Companies today are searching for the top percentage of the workforce to work for their company and communication becomes increasingly distorted when everyone is talking and no one is listening.  High achievers have become successful because of constant input and proactive abilities – when you only have a certain type of person forming workgroups then the heterogeneity creates team cohesion. Work style diversity is needed within workgroups to create greater cohesion because the abilities need to mesh in a similar fashion to a lock and key.  The distributed energies need to work off one another and increase group momentum to meet goals and the Ladder of Inference aids awareness when dealing with this critical type of communication concerning workgroups which ultimately is the life blood of the organization.

Affinity of Power

Power Introduction:

The concept of power is backed in research by David McClelland:

  1. Need for Power
  2. Need for Affiliation
  3. Need for Achievement

French & Raven’s 5 Bases of Power:

  1. Referent Power: Charismatic Leadership
  2. Legitimate Power: Formal Positional Leadership
  3. Expert Power: Knowledge-Based Leadership
  4. Reward Power: Transactional Leadership
  5. Coercive Power: Authoritative Leadership

*People seek to avoid Punishment & Strive for Rewards

Four Stages of Power

  1. Deriving Power from Others (i.e. Parents)
  2. Independent Powerfulness (i.e. Excessive Showiness)
  3. Helping Others (i.e. Executive Coach)
  4. Deriving Power from Higher Authority (Fortune 500 CEO)

The need for Power is universal basic need, but an excessive desire can and does lead to corruption.

This basic intro above is a precursor to opening new perspectives concerning the world around us…

We all Need Power – A Universal Human Need – Why is Power so Attractive?

  • Do we lack the Power we Desire?

Usually, and we strive through deliberate action to fulfill the need by way of the above 5 bases of power.

Lacking Power creates a Love of Rules to get Closer to Power because rules enable a power structure

  • Is there such an item as Ultimate Power?

Maybe, we would call it the creator of the universe but for humankind its not that simple.

  • If you had Complete Power, Would you be Corrupt? (i.e. Saddam Hussein)

The power to do whatever you please with whatever you want at any time and of Course we would all say, NO… but we are poor judgers of the future.

  • Is Not having Ultimate Power a Universal Law that Protects Humankind? (i.e. Law of Motion, Law of Gravity)

If so, this law is not explored at length as of yet.

  • Is Power as Conceptual as Time?

It exists whether we acknowledge it or not..

  • What is the Perception of Power? Is it Objective or Subjective?

Everyone has a different perception about the world around us based on our cultural values, education, environment, etc.

  • Is Power about Controlling or relinquishing Control? (i.e. Empowering Others)

True leadership and inner power concerns strategically relinquishing control, but unfortunately this pure perspective seems to be minimal when compared to the instinct to use Power to control through cohersion.

  • What is more important – External power or Internal power??
  • How can You Maximize Possession of Power without Hurting Anyone? (i.e. Senate vs. President) (checks and balance)

A very important question…

  • Who Controls the Perception of Power?

Maybe the perception of power is the truest form of power that goes undected because our cultural values tell us the system is created as just and whole to benefit our needs so the corrupt operations are accepted.

*Are we controlled by Institutional Power? (i.e. Parking Tickets, Taxes, etc…) “Control the people’s money and you control them”

Is Institutional Power Ethical? (Food for Thought)

Is the One who Controls the Perception of Power the Most Powerful?

Daily activities abide by rules governed by environment – Most are Man-Made to Control & Keep Order – Power Corrupts so it needs to be Monitored.

No one should have Ultimate Power because it will lead to destruction – Have you seen any movies lately concerning power?

Dictatorships in operation, from a distance, might seem fine and the people might justify the situation in order to have inner peace — but most of us know that this type of structure is inhumane and typically unfair to most.

Those who control the Perception of Power have the Ultimate Power over the Immediate Environment & the Human Need for this Power causes Institutional Struggles that have Reformulated Successful Societies over the Existence of Humankind – Have you read Machiavelli or 48 Laws of Power? Great books that are condemned because of the topic and style of writing, but if viewed through different lenses can provide great detail on how leadership and power operate in synchrony.

Fortunately, Ultimate Power does not exist – We all desire Power because it Creates a Sense of Self-Worth and a Sense of Control over the Environment. As Humans, we are Blessed with conscious awareness and the ability to perceive the Complexities of Power. Power is unseen and formed in our Collective Unconscious first described by Carl Jung. We are controlled by Power whether we like it or not. We hunger for the holy grail of power whether we acknowledge it or not and when in possession of expert, legitimate or any of the other types of power we should use this position for the greater good instead of greedy evil. Corrupt power at the highest levels of human hierarcharies have led to great destruction through world wars and financial collapse for centuries.  Abuse of power seems easier than applying this world changing ability of power control for the greater good because an inflated ego usually would reach for this perceived pinnacle of power through sheer motivation and dedication. Proper structures are necessary to prevent individualized power such as a board of directors, the United Nations, and the U.S. Senate.  These collective bodies prevent catastrophy when operated appropriately.

Power is Elusive – Power Controls – Power Dictates

Why is Autism on the Rise?

Autism affects the most innocent among us and autism experts who research this topic of concern are still “puzzled” as to why this is occurring at a higher frequency over the years.  We know that pharmaceutical companies put pressure on researchers to produce data that is aligned with the benefits of new medicine in order for billions in gain. Utilitarianism is an applied phrase that means to help the greater good. The brain has yet to be completely mapped and there are unknown processes that may unlock the answer as to why autism is hurting our children. Our society produces new drugs to fight new problems and we have become a culture of pill poppers. There seems to be a mutation that causes the effects of autism but isn’t this the case with most new phenomenon that we cannot fully explain. The evidence is inconclusive and my heart breaks for the affected children that want to have a normal average life but are sentenced to life with autism.

Polio was once the culprit and discoveries aided our adaptive ability – the case of autism is a growing concern that has the public involved – big business listens when we all speak together and we are hopeful that there will be a conclusive answer to this demoralizing problem soon.  Autism affects us all.

You could donate for continued research to fight the growing problem of autism. The scariest concern is that autism can happen to any family and nobody knows why which is why this cause is so important – below is a link to get involved right now:

Leadership is about identifying problems, setting goals, and overcoming obstacles – this is a problem we all face.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals Explained

Successful people create S.M.A.R.T. goals and people are successful because they create S.M.A.R.T. goals.  A true full circle – below is an outline of how you can apply S.M.A.R.T. goals to your process so you could enhance your success in a shorter amount of time and join the ranks of the Elite.

It all begins with an end goal in mind – A true desire – A need that you want to fill.  S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for creating a process to reach the end result with success.  Stress is produced when order turns into havoc and having a S.M.A.R.T. blueprint allows the goal to take on its own form of auto-pilot thus reducing associated stress.

S.M.A.R.T. goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

Specific – I want to make a lot of money vs. I want to make 250k within the next 8 months.  A specific measuring point provides you a metric for success or failure and provides a solid mental structure that creates motivation and purpose.

Measurable – Daily, Weekly, Monthly metrics are important when measuring your progress to meet the end goal.  Developing a specific amount of time per day dedicated to making a specific amount of money will allow you to measure the difference between existing and needed amounts to reach the end goal.  These measurable structures allow you to create an automated trajectory to meet your end goal.  This will allow you to adjust your metrics along the journey in order to reach the desired target or to reduce the end goal to a more realistic outcome. “Things that get measured get done” – Peter Drucker

Attainable – Or in other words realistic – You will not go from earning no money to earning 10 billion every 6 months.  Although we would like to make drastic leaps in earning potential, this is not realistic.  Develop a realistic goal that can be achieved.  Coaches note: Don’t sell yourself short either – You can achieve great things with great effort – All things are possible if you believe in yourself, find the correct operations, and work hard and diligently to achieve your desired results.

Relevant – How does this goal apply to your life? Are you motivated to meet this goal? Do you own the goal? The importance of the goal in relation to your life satisfaction is optimal for applying yourself to completing your efforts. If there is no substantial benefit or improvement then why are you doing it anyway? Choose your goals strategically and make certain that you want to achieve the desired results and gain a full understanding on the rewards you will receive on your journey.

Timely – Start the countdown – Without a time limit, the goal accomplishment could go on indefinitely.  Without a future goal post to signal the end will inhibit your success by allowing daily distractions to interfere with your required efforts. Success is defined as meeting goals. Set a feasible target date to enhance commitment and focus and this is the final step in being S.M.A.R.T.
