Leader Dilemma: Follower Fear and Future Uncertainty

People have needs. Needs are central to life. Unfulfilled needs create motivation and people are willing to do anything if their needs become extreme. What would you be willing to do for food or water if you were trapped in the desert? I bet you can’t imagine what you would truly do because it’s too scary.

We live in times of fear and uncertainty. Do all current situations create uncertainty? Were times uncertain 20 years ago? 50 years ago? 200 years ago? Humans are incapable of predicting the future. Did you know where you would be today – five (5) years ago? Think about it. How different was your prediction and your reality? You’re not alone.

Predicting tomorrow is a blind role of the dice at best, and the variables that are within our control are mostly ignored or treated with negligence. Unfortunately, our humanness directs us to make poor choices that change our future trajectory. We have two choices: either take responsibility for impulsive choices or blame others for the position we find ourselves in. The latter is the broadcasted voice because those voices are louder than ours. We choose to take responsibility because that is the only way forward.

People complain… A lot. “The squeaky wheel gets the oil.” In other words, people learn that if they complain, they will get a reward in exchange for their silence. People learn that complaining is a way to get others to provide for their needs. This creates a culture of negativity and entitlement. This slippery slope needs to be identified and handled properly before a point of no return is created. Can we trust the invisible hand concerning these devices? Laissez-faire leadership will not suffice and real changes need to be made to appease the public appeal. The million dollar questions are, what and how?

Why are the rich given all the benefits? Why should they have the finer things in life? We all believe that we should be rich and indulge in finer things. Well, all of us do deserve it. People should have the right to enjoy the utmost satisfaction available. The consequential catch is, we have to earn satisfaction or it has to be earned for us. Either we receive satisfaction as a gift or we have to use our unique human ability to think out solutions that create satisfaction.

Anyone could be within the 15% tax bracket if they really wanted it – All though it is easier for some than for others. There are more millionaires today than ever before. Some take action and some don’t. Some choose instant gratification and some delay. Choices have consequences and not everyone makes choices that support the long-term perspective. We should take responsibility, face reality, and take proper action (not everyone does). Those who don’t choose wisely, complain about what they don’t have, and what others have.

I have seen both sides of the financial equation and understand the struggle to escape the rat race… it can be done. People come from other countries, don’t know the language, postpone gratification, work hard, and become wealthy. Others are born wealthy. Regardless, in America, the opportunity exists. Success requires a relentless pursuit of knowledge, personal and professional development, and a positive mental attitude that develops solutions that impact long-term development.

It is human to fear the unknown and tomorrow is a statistical uncertainty. However, there is a solution. We control what happens tomorrow, with the choices we make today. Nevertheless, we do not control other’s actions. The existing culture and reward system dictate mass behavior and we look to our leaders for guidance. We look to our system for protection and security. We want to believe in our leaders and have faith that the greater good is their main objective and focus.

Our leaders are our representatives and need to conduct themselves with honor and dignity. America has a trust issue. Trust promotes development and lack of trust promotes a decline. We need our leaders to end the trail of deceit left by corrupt individuals who chose immediate gratification and damaged all preceding interconnected relationships.

Distancing the dishonorable actions of past leaders is the appropriate step in regaining public trust and overcoming uncertainty. Public leaders take on a greater responsibility and have more weight to bear because they’re a symbol of our self-identification. Unfortunately, public leaders will always be scrutinized regardless of genuine self-less leadership and need to be aware of the repercussions before accepting these incredibly stressful and fulfilling positions.

These valuable few leaders are not concerned with immediate gratification. Rather, their legends live on and their service to humanity is forever enshrined in stories told to future generations.

My writings are intended to raise awareness and enhance the lives we live. Half my life has been spent learning these insights and sharing is an attempt to improve and touch your life, the lives of others you touch, and on.

To release your inner leadership strength, there has to be a need and an opportunity. There is always an opportunity to be the leader of your life, and the role of leader is not reserved for legends. These quotes come from individuals like us, who were once babies, received nurture, mentoring, and an opportunity that fulfilled an inner desire that propelled them to leadership lore. These are the leaders that are well-known and have left a legacy through words and stories. Other great leaders are unsung by society and leave an ever-lasting impact through the people they have touched. Our mothers, fathers, and the sacrifices embraced by our unnamed ancestors have blazed the path that we travel today. We lead with our actions and that creates the environment of tomorrow. We all take responsiblity and we all take the blame…we are all leaders.”

7 Areas of Limitation in Career Development

  1. Limited Self-Belief and Lack of Self-Esteem

As career professionals, we generally underestimate our own abilities and attribute a greater degree of efficiency and aptitude to others. This limiting belief holds career development back from achieving its full potential. Professionals who desire career advancement need to understand that their abilities match up competitively with others in their field. Developing self-belief and self-esteem are the first steps for successful self-representation. Confidence is contagious and easily identified.

  1. Self-Defeating Behaviors

Everyone has habits, some good and some bad. Bad habits interfere with career development. Saying inappropriate things or making improper gestures at the wrong time does not present itself favorably with co-workers, bosses, or gatekeepers. Behaviors develop reputations that precede professional engagements. Judgments are passed based on previous work behaviors and rumors are spread that illuminate this perceived flaw. Stress and fatigue contribute to less than desirable behavior and being aware of other’s reactions is a tell sign that should alert us to keep or replace enacted behaviors.

  1. Uninformed about Steps and Techniques Needed for Progression and Advancement

Most workers find themselves doing repetitive tasks and wonder why they’re not advancing. Some people are satisfied doing the ordinary, but not you (or you wouldn’t be wasting your time reading this). Ask questions – how did she move up so fast? What did she do? How did she do it? Who was her contact? Here are 7 steps that can be implemented right away and possibly the missing element needed for your promotion: 1. Create relationships 2. Be early, leave late 3. Do more than asked 4. Tell everyone how great your boss is 5. Support other departments 6. Ask for more work and do it 7. Ask for a promotion. If you don’t accept just getting by then you will advance. Ultimately, the blame for our failure or success rests on our shoulders and we need to identify the sequential steps to meet our needs regardless of how difficult these steps could be.

  1. Misaligned Goals and Values

Goals and values are not the same thing. However, negative effects are felt when they are not in sync. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Is that really where you want to be? What do you value most in life? Does that goal align with your most important value? When goals and values are aligned, there is an aura of synergy that is created, jubilance in work follows, new energy is created, positive momentum is created, and a resounding vigor is experienced. Do you feel a weight on your shoulders? Maybe your goals and values are in misalignment. What quick change could you make to have the two roads meet?

  1. Lack of Self-Awareness concerning Strengths, Knowledge, and Abilities (KSAs)

Never underestimate your education and life experience. Most people do. We all have strengths, but not all of us take the time and put in the effort needed to make innate strengths into abilities. Not knowing your strengths can limit your development for the long-term. What do you enjoy doing? What do you do without any effort? Where do you get the most compliments from others? We all have life experiences that shape our behaviors and attitudes. These life lessons are not learned or experienced by everyone. We learn by doing. It is common to underestimate our knowledge. We assume that others know the same things and others have had similar experiences. This is not the case. We share similar experiences within cultures, but the overall picture for each individual is unique. We are all different in our own ways and have something valuable to add to the conversation. Never underestimate your value.

  1. Inability to Communicate Effectively

Did you ever hear of the game “telephone”? A message is whispered from one player to the next and the message heard by the last player is always completely different from the original message. The biggest problem in today’s fast paced, over-worked, and over-informed environment is the inability to communicate effectively. As an author or writer, one learns to write as if the audience does not know anything. On the other hand, when we speak or write, we generally accept that our audience has a basic understanding of the topic. The error in communication lies in not clearly providing the message as it is intended. Critical points are excluded to maximize time, but those points need to be filled in by the audience receiving the message. This misunderstanding leads to crucial errors and ultimately destroys more time than was initially saved. Take the time to communicate your message clearly and effectively in the first place and save yourself the headache of having to clean up the associated errors.

  1. Lack of Leveraging Networks and Relationships

The general belief is that our closest friends and family are the only ones who would help us in times of need. Studies on social networking suggest that this is completely wrong. Your external network is willing to help and you need to leverage the benefits. Loose connections seem to provide greater benefits and they find greater opportunities that your immediate network could never realize. The power of your external network exists in its positioning which is completely outside your immediate network’s reach. Ask for support and probe your distant network to see how they can support your career development. People are willing to help. It’s our nature. Your external network could provide the needed boost that will take your career to the next level. If your distant network is limited then you need to create an action plan for cultivating connections. In today’s globalized and interconnected economy, competition is high, and relationships are gold. Ultimately, this works because of reciprocity and the genuine character of our kind. When you get the opportunity, pay it forward because what goes around comes around.

Leadership Rules: Is there an Unfair Advantage in MMA?

Anderson Silva & Chael Sonnen will meet in the center of the octagon to compete in hand-to-hand combat to declare a winner of their highly anticipated rematch.

There are no weapons used in MMA. Each fighter has to meet a specific weight to compete with determined fairness.

But, is the fight really fair?

Do the two competitors have equal advantages?

Any created advantage in the octagon can heavily tip the tides of the fight and put the opponent’s safety in jeopardy. Leadership has for decades seen to the safety of prize fighters, and sports in general, has encountered corruption involving illegal drugs for quite some time.

Are the athletes to blame or are leadership councils allowing unfair advantages to occur in order to boost ratings, attraction, fan base, and revenue?

Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is used as an aid to increase the decreasing levels of testosterone in older athletes. As we age, our youth declines and our performance is reduced. Addressing this natural decline with testosterone aids such as TRT reestablishes youth in the aging fighter.

Is this an unfair advantage?

The natural advantage of age is experience.

The natural advantage of youth is energy and vigor.

There is no way to provide experience synthetically to a younger fighter. Providing anti-aging benefits to older fighters gives them an unfair advantage over their inexperienced counterpart.

From a competitor’s point of view, addressing the performance gap created by declining testosterone levels will increase performance, boost popularity because of success in the octagon, and increase financial income. Anyone in that position with that much to gain will 99 times out of 100 choose TRT. TRT is allowed in MMA and there is no reason for an aging fighter not to replenish their system in order to compete at a higher level.

Athletes are not to blame for making the allowed choice of addressing their weaknesses.

Leadership needs to acknowledge the disadvantages that are presented to the younger fighter and make a difficult choice concerning which are more important:

The immediate gain in popularity from continuing the legacy of older fighters by way of performance enhancements or allowing MMA to apply Olympic style testing that will allow natural competition and decrease the unfair advantages seen by younger fighters when entering the octagon against synthetically enhanced veterans.

Identifying Visionary Leadership on the 4th of July

The 4th of July, a day in history that presented the U.S. Declaration of Independence and changed the face of the world forever. The magnanimous courage expressed by the founding fathers was simply extraordinary. Opposed by a superior force and committed to an “all or nothing” strategy that yearned for independence. The 4th of July represents a true uniting vision that stimulated a resounding victory which has led to inspiring billions of people to have faith and courage in the face of fear. The 4th of July is a trademark of freedom and a symbol of visionary leadership that is constantly recognized and praised throughout the world.

The culmination of great minds who seen a healthier future and understood the consequences decided to take a leap of faith. Signing the Declaration of Independence sent a clear message that Americans were going to fight for Independence at all costs. The 4th of July was a day where Americans declared a war on tyranny and provided the foundation for democracy.

The unique system that was crafted beginning back in the late 1700s has stood the test of time and has been a blueprint for successful democracy. The future is unknown as it was back on this day in 1776, but our forefathers provided a design for leadership success that guides us further into the future.

  1. Make a meaningful decision that has a greater meaning than the self in mind and that has a greater call to action than one can imagine.
  2. Never relent on your vision and continue to improve the road to victory as you travel.
  3. Understand that tomorrow has to be improved upon by acting today.
  4. Lead with courage and integrity against all adversity.
  5. Hold with confidence in the face of fear and uncertainty.
  6. Craft a message that is beyond our years and reverberates with people in the future.
  7. Form partnerships with others who have an ability to contribute to the mission.

Leadership is about inspiring action and enabling others to draw their own design that aligns with the overall vision. Leadership is about creating vision that clearly identifies a better future and allows others to view the grand reconstructed beauty. The value of great leadership is priceless and the accomplishments forecasted by our forefather’s vision still echoes of intense commitment heard around the world.

We live today to nurture the visualization of freedom, independence, and democracy. The words crafted into the U.S. Constitution are the foundation of democracy and govern the laws that protect our freedoms. The incredible advances over the past 100+ years hold homage to the vision declared on the 4th of July in 1776. Let us celebrate what so many willingly gave their lives to develop and protect. Freedom.

We NEED Ethical Leadership

GlaxoSmithKline to pay 3 billion in fines for bribing MDs to prescribe and illegally promote Paxil, Wellbutrin and Avandia where it was not regulated by the FDA and withheld research showing adverse effects (i.e. stroke).
MDs need to be held responsible for prescribing and endangering patients lives when they knew of the consequences.
Medical licenses should be stripped.
MDs take the Hippocratic oath and it doesn’t state that they should endanger people for their own financial gain.
**We all knew this was happening and now here is the proof.
Here is the Link to the full story in the Chicago Tribune: http://alturl.com/a87so
These are the problems at the top that are trickling down.
When leadership is corrupt, companies and followers crash and burn.
We need ethical leadership.
Collateral damage in the name of individual wealth is unacceptable.
We need accountability and transparency.
Checks and balances, oaths and laws, trust and integrity, are foundational and need to be leveraged for the greater good.
This is a prime example of why leadership is extremely valuable and important.
Crash and burn or survive and thrive? I know what Leadership I want to follow.

100 Most Influential World Leaders of All Time

This is an incredible Slide Share on Leadership and I had to share it with you – Please enjoy!!

Leadership on U.S. Health and asking “HOW” for Long-Term Success

Click here —> Leadership on U.S. Health Care <— for the audio

The current health system is broken. Corruption, theft, and incompetence are a few of the problems. Health is the basic essential to living a satisfied life and everything else is extra. Everyone needs to take responsibility and end the blame game. Requiring everyone to have health insurance is not an “I” decision – it’s a “WE” decision and a brave first step in making proper changes.

We could probably agree that it’s not a perfect solution, and there will be growing pains. But, isn’t it about the greater good or is it about “I”? Was there a better proposed solution? “We need solutions not critics”. We need to have a “long” time perspective to succeed.

“United we Stand, Divided we fall” –- “Divide and Conquer”

These are famous sayings because they are TRUE. Democracy is a unique experiment that was invented by our great leaders of the past. It was our forefather’s vision that provides our current security and it is our responsibility to pay that “VISION” forward.

Leadership is about having a concept about the future. Long time-orientation provides greater wealth and achievement. Having a long-term plan is a mandatory action for success. Great organizations survive storms with great leadership, and great leadership is about forecasting future events that could compromise continuous development.

Short-sighted thinking is a sure way to achieve failure. A narrow focus on yesterday and today will lead to a less than desirable tomorrow. The future is a leader’s greatest concern.

Accomplishment is possible regardless of where you begin as long as you can set a realistic path to achieve your goals. The only limitation is the one we allow ourselves to believe.

Asking “HOW” is the critical question that creates possibilities and solutions. “HOW” creates strategies and innovation. “HOW” makes all things possible. HOW can you be the leader of yourself and HOW can you inspire others to LEAD.

Leadership is “Living your Life to the Fullest”. Fulfill your GOD-given potential: LEAD with LOVE, Ask “HOW” to create solutions, Lead with a better Vision of the future, BELIEVE that you can do anything that you focus on doing, and support the continued momentum that makes our civilization great.

Leadership Essentials: Public Speaking

Public speaking is the #1 feared activity which is why leadership is magnified through the lens of public speaking.  Great leadership is communicated with a superior ability to provide dynamic speeches in public that capture people’s imaginations.

The public speaking platform is essential for leadership and developing the ability to communicate effectively to large audiences is crucial for leadership excellence.

Great leaders such as JFK and MLK are instantly recognized by only a few letters because their ability to communicate in the public speaking forum transformed our world and culture. Their legacies have grown because new generations view their legendary speeches which speak volumes about them as individuals. Powerful speakers create a magical connection with their viewers that is simply captivating and is the basis of leadership.

The art of public speaking can be learned by any motivated individual who desires to make an impact with their leadership communication. A very skilful communicator creates a connection, motivation, inspiration, and action through their command of message and the relatability of their communication style.

Becoming a presidential type speaker takes time and deliberate practice is needed to develop the necessary skills. Some people have the natural gift of gab and are fearless in front of large crowds, but this is not typical of everyone.

Ronald Reagan, known as the “Great Communicator”, developed his speaking abilities first as an actor and then as a spokesperson for General Electric (GE) touring the country for over a decade. He developed his public speaking abilities that transformed him from an actor into the President of the United States of America. “Public speaking is a vital Leadership skill”.

Action Steps for Improving Leadership with Public Speaking

Learn to cultivate your personal story and practice communicating to audiences. Start small to gain confidence and then expand to keep challenging yourself after you become comfortable. The rule is, “if you are too comfortable, then you are not challenging yourself enough”.

I recommend initially videotaping yourself giving speeches which will allow you to be your first critic and reduce flaws before presenting to your first audience. Video feedback has been found to be one of the best ways to give and receive feedback. You won’t believe how you really look…

Secondly, joining a public speaking group such as Toastmasters.org or taking a Dale Carnegie public speaking class will increase your learning ability and simultaneously provide community support from like-minded people. Lastly, the cheaper way to develop your public speaking would be reading a book and I recommend “Stand and Deliver” – a small book that packs a large punch.

If your aim is to be a leader then public speaking is an essential skill you must develop for success.
