Leader Dilemma: Follower Fear and Future Uncertainty

People have needs. Needs are central to life. Unfulfilled needs create motivation and people are willing to do anything if their needs become extreme. What would you be willing to do for food or water if you were trapped in the desert? I bet you can’t imagine what you would truly do because it’s too scary.

We live in times of fear and uncertainty. Do all current situations create uncertainty? Were times uncertain 20 years ago? 50 years ago? 200 years ago? Humans are incapable of predicting the future. Did you know where you would be today – five (5) years ago? Think about it. How different was your prediction and your reality? You’re not alone.

Predicting tomorrow is a blind role of the dice at best, and the variables that are within our control are mostly ignored or treated with negligence. Unfortunately, our humanness directs us to make poor choices that change our future trajectory. We have two choices: either take responsibility for impulsive choices or blame others for the position we find ourselves in. The latter is the broadcasted voice because those voices are louder than ours. We choose to take responsibility because that is the only way forward.

People complain… A lot. “The squeaky wheel gets the oil.” In other words, people learn that if they complain, they will get a reward in exchange for their silence. People learn that complaining is a way to get others to provide for their needs. This creates a culture of negativity and entitlement. This slippery slope needs to be identified and handled properly before a point of no return is created. Can we trust the invisible hand concerning these devices? Laissez-faire leadership will not suffice and real changes need to be made to appease the public appeal. The million dollar questions are, what and how?

Why are the rich given all the benefits? Why should they have the finer things in life? We all believe that we should be rich and indulge in finer things. Well, all of us do deserve it. People should have the right to enjoy the utmost satisfaction available. The consequential catch is, we have to earn satisfaction or it has to be earned for us. Either we receive satisfaction as a gift or we have to use our unique human ability to think out solutions that create satisfaction.

Anyone could be within the 15% tax bracket if they really wanted it – All though it is easier for some than for others. There are more millionaires today than ever before. Some take action and some don’t. Some choose instant gratification and some delay. Choices have consequences and not everyone makes choices that support the long-term perspective. We should take responsibility, face reality, and take proper action (not everyone does). Those who don’t choose wisely, complain about what they don’t have, and what others have.

I have seen both sides of the financial equation and understand the struggle to escape the rat race… it can be done. People come from other countries, don’t know the language, postpone gratification, work hard, and become wealthy. Others are born wealthy. Regardless, in America, the opportunity exists. Success requires a relentless pursuit of knowledge, personal and professional development, and a positive mental attitude that develops solutions that impact long-term development.

It is human to fear the unknown and tomorrow is a statistical uncertainty. However, there is a solution. We control what happens tomorrow, with the choices we make today. Nevertheless, we do not control other’s actions. The existing culture and reward system dictate mass behavior and we look to our leaders for guidance. We look to our system for protection and security. We want to believe in our leaders and have faith that the greater good is their main objective and focus.

Our leaders are our representatives and need to conduct themselves with honor and dignity. America has a trust issue. Trust promotes development and lack of trust promotes a decline. We need our leaders to end the trail of deceit left by corrupt individuals who chose immediate gratification and damaged all preceding interconnected relationships.

Distancing the dishonorable actions of past leaders is the appropriate step in regaining public trust and overcoming uncertainty. Public leaders take on a greater responsibility and have more weight to bear because they’re a symbol of our self-identification. Unfortunately, public leaders will always be scrutinized regardless of genuine self-less leadership and need to be aware of the repercussions before accepting these incredibly stressful and fulfilling positions.

These valuable few leaders are not concerned with immediate gratification. Rather, their legends live on and their service to humanity is forever enshrined in stories told to future generations.

As career professionals, we generally underestimate our own abilities and attribute a greater degree of efficiency and aptitude to others. This limiting belief holds career development back from achieving its full potential. Professionals who desire career advancement need to understand that their abilities match up competitively with others in their field. Developing self-belief and self-esteem are the first steps for successful self-representation. Confidence is contagious and easily identified.

  1. Self-Defeating Behaviors

Everyone has habits, some good and some bad. Bad habits interfere with career development. Saying inappropriate things or making improper gestures at the wrong time does not present itself favorably with co-workers, bosses, or gatekeepers. Identifying Visionary Leadership on the 4th of July

The 4th of July, a day in history that presented the U.S. Declaration of Independence and changed the face of the world forever. The magnanimous courage expressed by the founding fathers was simply extraordinary. Opposed by a superior force and committed to an “all or nothing” strategy that yearned for independence. The 4th of July represents a true uniting vision that stimulated a resounding victory which has led to inspiring billions of people to have faith and courage in the face of fear. The 4th of July is a trademark of freedom and a symbol of visionary leadership that is constantly recognized and praised throughout the world.

The culmination of great minds who seen a healthier future and understood the consequences decided to take a leap of faith. We NEED Ethical Leadership

GlaxoSmithKline to pay 3 billion in fines for bribing MDs to prescribe and illegally promote Paxil, Wellbutrin and Avandia where it was not regulated by the FDA and withheld research showing adverse effects (i.e. stroke).
MDs need to be held responsible for prescribing and endangering patients lives when they knew of the consequences.
Medical licenses should be stripped.
MDs take the Hippocratic oath and it doesn’t state that they should endanger people for their own financial gain.
**We all knew this was happening and now here is the proof.

These are the problems at the top that are trickling down.
When leadership is corrupt, companies and followers crash and burn.
We need ethical leadership.
Collateral damage in the name of individual wealth is unacceptable.
We need accountability and transparency.
Checks and balances, oaths and laws, trust and integrity, are foundational and need to be leveraged for the greater good.
This is a prime example of why leadership is extremely valuable and important.

The current health system is broken. Corruption, theft, and incompetence are a few of the problems. Health is the basic essential to living a satisfied life and everything else is extra. Everyone needs to take responsibility and end the blame game. Requiring everyone to have health insurance is not an “I” decision – it’s a “WE” decision and a brave first step in making proper changes.

We could probably agree that it’s not a perfect solution, and there will be growing pains. But, isn’t it about the greater good or is it about “I”? Was there a better proposed solution? “We need solutions not critics”. We need to have a “long” time perspective to succeed.

“United we Stand, Divided we fall” –- “Divide and Conquer”

These are famous sayings because they are TRUE. Democracy is a unique experiment that was invented by our great leaders of the past. It was our forefather’s vision that provides our current security and it is our responsibility to pay that “VISION” forward.

Leadership is about having a concept about the future. Long time-orientation provides greater wealth and achievement. Having a long-term plan is a mandatory action for success. Great organizations survive storms with great leadership, and great leadership is about forecasting future events that could compromise continuous development.

Short-sighted thinking is a sure way to achieve failure. A narrow focus on yesterday and today will lead to a less than desirable tomorrow. The future is a leader’s greatest concern.

Accomplishment is possible regardless of where you begin as long as you can set a realistic path to achieve your goals. The only limitation is the one we allow ourselves to believe.

Asking “HOW” is the critical question that creates possibilities and solutions. “HOW” creates strategies and innovation. “HOW” makes all things possible. HOW can you be the leader of yourself and HOW can you inspire others to LEAD.

Leadership Essentials: Public Speaking

Public speaking is the #1 feared activity which is why leadership is magnified through the lens of public speaking.  Great leadership is communicated with a superior ability to provide dynamic speeches in public that capture people’s imaginations.

The public speaking platform is essential for leadership and developing the ability to communicate effectively to large audiences is crucial for leadership excellence.

Great leaders such as JFK and MLK are instantly recognized by only a few letters because their ability to communicate in the public speaking forum transformed our world and culture. I recommend initially videotaping yourself giving speeches which will allow you to be your first critic and reduce flaws before presenting to your first audience. Video feedback has been found to be one of the best ways to give and receive feedback. You won’t believe how you really look…

Secondly, joining a public speaking group such as Toastmasters.org or taking a Dale Carnegie public speaking class will increase your learning ability and simultaneously provide community support from like-minded people. Lastly, the cheaper way to develop your public speaking would be reading a book and I recommend “Stand and Deliver” – a small book that packs a large punch.

If your aim is to be a leader then public speaking is an essential skill you must develop for success.

The Future of Leadership

According to Abraham Maslow, Peter Drucker’s management principles accurately apply to the leaders who have evolved and are at the top of human development. These leaders have met all of their requirements in life and their needs are fulfilled. The strategies purported by Peter Drucker neatly fit the lifestyle of the prototypical leader.

Applying Peter Drucker’s principles to leadership is an effective way to operate with efficiency and success. However, these tactics are only effective for a small minority of leaders.

Today, leadership is not based on old-school principles of preformatted industry giants with similar executive knowhow who replace each other with symmetry. Rather, the leadership role has embraced different styles and types of individuals that compliment the change in society at large. Tomorrow’s leadership will continue to diversify and change in lockstep with the ever adapting economy. The knowledge economy has shifted responsibilities of leadership to a new breed of self-starters and entrepreneurs who do not possess the skills required from a leader who fits into Peter Drucker’s leadership principles.

Employees are more informed, consumers are more informed, the media keeps leaders honest, and the distance between yesterday and today is vast. Strengths-Based Process: Leveraging Strengths for Success

We all have strengths – We all have weaknesses.

The common consensus is that we should improve our weaknesses to become more balanced and competent.  This misinformed belief leads people to become average. None of us are satisfied with average – there has to be another way to develop.

Yes, you need to be aware of your weaknesses and not allow them to inhibit your development.  Weaknesses need to be mitigated, but spending all of our time focusing on improving weaknesses is an exercise in futility.

We all have areas of weakness. There are several reasons for this and one reason is it is physically impossible to be perfect at everything. The best reason is that we do not mentally and physically enjoy doing the things we are weakest at doing and spend less time operating in those areas.  We avoid doing things that are unpleasant and we gravitate to doing the things that we enjoy the most. The things we enjoy doing the most become our strengths because we have more deliberate practice in these areas. Ultimately, we should concentrate on maximizing our strengths because we enjoy spending our energy and time focusing on these areas.

  • We have more to offer others when we express our strengths and cultivate our expertise.
