7 Areas of Limitation in Career Development

  1. Limited Self-Belief and Lack of Self-Esteem

As career professionals, we generally underestimate our own abilities and attribute a greater degree of efficiency and aptitude to others. This limiting belief holds career development back from achieving its full potential. Professionals who desire career advancement need to understand that their abilities match up competitively with others in their field. Developing self-belief and self-esteem are the first steps for successful self-representation. Confidence is contagious and easily identified.

  1. Self-Defeating Behaviors

Everyone has habits, some good and some bad. Bad habits interfere with career development. Saying inappropriate things or making improper gestures at the wrong time does not present itself favorably with co-workers, bosses, or gatekeepers. Behaviors develop reputations that precede professional engagements. Judgments are passed based on previous work behaviors and rumors are spread that illuminate this perceived flaw. Stress and fatigue contribute to less than desirable behavior and being aware of other’s reactions is a tell sign that should alert us to keep or replace enacted behaviors.

  1. Uninformed about Steps and Techniques Needed for Progression and Advancement

Most workers find themselves doing repetitive tasks and wonder why they’re not advancing. Some people are satisfied doing the ordinary, but not you (or you wouldn’t be wasting your time reading this). Ask questions – how did she move up so fast? What did she do? How did she do it? Who was her contact? Here are 7 steps that can be implemented right away and possibly the missing element needed for your promotion: 1. Create relationships 2. Be early, leave late 3. Do more than asked 4. Tell everyone how great your boss is 5. Support other departments 6. Ask for more work and do it 7. Ask for a promotion. If you don’t accept just getting by then you will advance. Ultimately, the blame for our failure or success rests on our shoulders and we need to identify the sequential steps to meet our needs regardless of how difficult these steps could be.

  1. Misaligned Goals and Values

Goals and values are not the same thing. However, negative effects are felt when they are not in sync. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Is that really where you want to be? What do you value most in life? Does that goal align with your most important value? When goals and values are aligned, there is an aura of synergy that is created, jubilance in work follows, new energy is created, positive momentum is created, and a resounding vigor is experienced. Do you feel a weight on your shoulders? Maybe your goals and values are in misalignment. What quick change could you make to have the two roads meet?

  1. Lack of Self-Awareness concerning Strengths, Knowledge, and Abilities (KSAs)

Never underestimate your education and life experience. Most people do. We all have strengths, but not all of us take the time and put in the effort needed to make innate strengths into abilities. Not knowing your strengths can limit your development for the long-term. What do you enjoy doing? What do you do without any effort? Where do you get the most compliments from others? We all have life experiences that shape our behaviors and attitudes. These life lessons are not learned or experienced by everyone. We learn by doing. It is common to underestimate our knowledge. We assume that others know the same things and others have had similar experiences. This is not the case. We share similar experiences within cultures, but the overall picture for each individual is unique. We are all different in our own ways and have something valuable to add to the conversation. Never underestimate your value.

  1. Inability to Communicate Effectively

Did you ever hear of the game “telephone”? A message is whispered from one player to the next and the message heard by the last player is always completely different from the original message. The biggest problem in today’s fast paced, over-worked, and over-informed environment is the inability to communicate effectively. As an author or writer, one learns to write as if the audience does not know anything. On the other hand, when we speak or write, we generally accept that our audience has a basic understanding of the topic. The error in communication lies in not clearly providing the message as it is intended. Critical points are excluded to maximize time, but those points need to be filled in by the audience receiving the message. This misunderstanding leads to crucial errors and ultimately destroys more time than was initially saved. Take the time to communicate your message clearly and effectively in the first place and save yourself the headache of having to clean up the associated errors.

  1. Lack of Leveraging Networks and Relationships

The general belief is that our closest friends and family are the only ones who would help us in times of need. Studies on social networking suggest that this is completely wrong. Your external network is willing to help and you need to leverage the benefits. Loose connections seem to provide greater benefits and they find greater opportunities that your immediate network could never realize. The power of your external network exists in its positioning which is completely outside your immediate network’s reach. Ask for support and probe your distant network to see how they can support your career development. People are willing to help. It’s our nature. Your external network could provide the needed boost that will take your career to the next level. If your distant network is limited then you need to create an action plan for cultivating connections. In today’s globalized and interconnected economy, competition is high, and relationships are gold. Ultimately, this works because of reciprocity and the genuine character of our kind. When you get the opportunity, pay it forward because what goes around comes around.

New Leader – Team Communication Error: Problems and Solutions

Great individual performers who are promoted to leadership positions are used to producing superior results which are the reason for their promotion. These standout performers have customized frameworks set in place that guide their performance.  Their frameworks have taken years of development and their work experience and education has created a blueprint for success. As a new organizational leader, these company superstars’ job roles have changed. Now they need to rely on the work ethic of others to complete tasks and projects. They assume their job is to motivate a similar work production from their team members and this assumed inherent belief causes conflict.

The newly appointed leader tries to impose their work style on their team members because they have learned the most effective way for project success within the organization. A team member wants to use this information to leverage their ability to complete projects out of respect for their team leader and organization, but specific work styles are not always for everyone. The company as a whole wants prototypes of their new leader because of the superior gains realized through their company superstar’s individual performance. Everyone involved wants to meet this goal, but the internal structure cannot support the mission. Solutions are needed to avoid a domino effect of failure before it is too late.

Imposing the leader’s work style on team members has a way of backfiring, and causing internal conflict because people have different abilities and styles that are sometimes inflexible. This misalignment causes frustration, friction, and a lack of effective communication for everyone involved. Ultimately, the project suffers, employee’s turnoff, and the company superstar is now seen as an incompetent leader.

Leadership coaching removes the situational dilemma associated with leadership promotion by providing a framework for understanding different work styles and mediates the communication to improve the overall message. Usually, a new leader’s message gets lost in translation because of the emotional elements involved in these novel situations such as the transition to having enlarged responsibilities while at the same time having less control. The new leader has to understand the new territory of leadership and how to effectively navigate the controls by influencing team members to execute their style effectively to complete the project with excellence and on time. Leaders hold accountability, create a vision, communicate the mission, and inspire their team members to contribute their best. Leadership coaching provides the support system needed for new leaders to steer their team to success and create greater gains for their organizations sustainability. As you can see, the return on investment for leadership coaching is impressive when understood in the correct context.

Becoming a Coaching Client (Coachee)

The needed mindset of a successful coachee relies on 5 factors:

1. Openness to new experience.

2. Commitment to self-work.

3. Deep thinking for resolution.

4. Ability to deal with moments of discomfort.

5. A strong motivation to become more successful.

Becoming a first time coaching client is a new experience that from a distance can be intimidating and seem to be an uncomfortable venture that is less than desirable.

The coaching experience is quite the opposite and clients who have taken this venture usually retain a coach to assist their development concerning multiple issues throughout life.

The coaching engagement begins with a consultation between coach and potential client to understand situations, concerns, desires, goals, and to answer specific questions. Furthermore, the ground rules (i.e. meeting times, confidentiality, etc.) for the coaching engagement are discussed and agreed upon.

Following the initial consultation, a customized engagement is created for each individual coaching client with a focus on actionable goals, strategy creation, and actualizing achievement.

Not all coaching is created equal and finding the ideal coach who fits with your mission and life values is essential for enhanced overall success.

The coach-coachee relationship is a partnership that has a joint agreement to reach desired outcomes or goals. The coachee is required to commit to the hard work needed to implement and sustain positive change in life.

The coachee controls the information within the coaching relationship and the coach drives the pace and directional focus which is in the best interest of the coachee.

Trust and confidentiality is achieved and maintained by the coach throughout the engagement to enable the coachee to obtain a deeper understand of self, situation, and process that limit or enhance performance.

Coaching is about raising awareness and maximizing strengths within situations that maximize results and overall satisfaction. Avoiding problems and acknowledging behaviors are silent or lesser known enhancements that provide substantial benefits in most future situations.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals Explained

Successful people create S.M.A.R.T. goals and people are successful because they create S.M.A.R.T. goals.  A true full circle – below is an outline of how you can apply S.M.A.R.T. goals to your process so you could enhance your success in a shorter amount of time and join the ranks of the Elite.

It all begins with an end goal in mind – A true desire – A need that you want to fill.  S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for creating a process to reach the end result with success.  Stress is produced when order turns into havoc and having a S.M.A.R.T. blueprint allows the goal to take on its own form of auto-pilot thus reducing associated stress.

S.M.A.R.T. goals are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely.

Specific – I want to make a lot of money vs. I want to make 250k within the next 8 months.  A specific measuring point provides you a metric for success or failure and provides a solid mental structure that creates motivation and purpose.

Measurable – Daily, Weekly, Monthly metrics are important when measuring your progress to meet the end goal.  Developing a specific amount of time per day dedicated to making a specific amount of money will allow you to measure the difference between existing and needed amounts to reach the end goal.  These measurable structures allow you to create an automated trajectory to meet your end goal.  This will allow you to adjust your metrics along the journey in order to reach the desired target or to reduce the end goal to a more realistic outcome. “Things that get measured get done” – Peter Drucker

Attainable – Or in other words realistic – You will not go from earning no money to earning 10 billion every 6 months.  Although we would like to make drastic leaps in earning potential, this is not realistic.  Develop a realistic goal that can be achieved.  Coaches note: Don’t sell yourself short either – You can achieve great things with great effort – All things are possible if you believe in yourself, find the correct operations, and work hard and diligently to achieve your desired results.

Relevant – How does this goal apply to your life? Are you motivated to meet this goal? Do you own the goal? The importance of the goal in relation to your life satisfaction is optimal for applying yourself to completing your efforts. If there is no substantial benefit or improvement then why are you doing it anyway? Choose your goals strategically and make certain that you want to achieve the desired results and gain a full understanding on the rewards you will receive on your journey.

Timely – Start the countdown – Without a time limit, the goal accomplishment could go on indefinitely.  Without a future goal post to signal the end will inhibit your success by allowing daily distractions to interfere with your required efforts. Success is defined as meeting goals. Set a feasible target date to enhance commitment and focus and this is the final step in being S.M.A.R.T.

Negotiate like a Pro – Quick List of Negotiating Tips

Most people don’t like to negotiate – studies have shown that negotiation is the main  reason women receive less pay when compared to men in the workplace.  Negotiation does not always have to be sneaky or intimidating – especially if you know certain techniques.  Organizations want to know how well you can negotiate because this ability will serve the organizational cause in the future – If you are poor at negotiating then you will be perceived as a liability to the company and receive less money in the process.  Below are a few solid techniques to aid you in your development of negotiating skills and to earning a greater degree of respect from the other side.

  • Negotiations are time-bound and 80% of the action happens during the final 20% of the time
  • Strategy: Create additional demands during the final 20% of time to increase pressure
  • Enter negotiations with a full understanding of what you are willing to accept
  • Bring your requirements along with a list of unreasonable requests to create camouflage
  • Each side likes to win points and these unreasonable requests will serve you well during the final portion of negotiation
  • Make them seem important and do not show your hand – they will allow you to achieve your goal
  • Give up your unreasonable requests late in the negotiation so the other side will get a win and you could exchange for something important
  • Watch body language to see if it aligns with what is being said verbally – misalignment means a bluff or lie

Stay patient – Patience Wins

Below are my takeaways from the book “Rework”  http://37signals.com/rework/

Focus on what won’t change:

Free Shipping – Great selection – Friendly Return Policies – Affordable Prices – Reliability – Practicality – Speed – Simplicity – Ease of use – Clarity

Pick a fight with the best competitor: i.e. Apple vs. Microsoft

Under do the competitiondon’t offer all the bells and whistles for the sake of competition

Emulate Chefs: Give your recipes away – share everything

Focus on getting your story into a Trade Publication or a Niche Blogger

Instant Cultures are Artificial – “culture is a byproduct of consistent behavior” – (I like this one)

Don’t use the words: need, must, can’t, easy, just, only, fast, everyone, no one, always, never

“Before” and “After”

“What you don’t know – you don’t know”

Sometimes this removes responsibility but limits us to living below our potential

Knowledge is power when used and this process includes a few key steps

Once the internal motivation is prepared the spark of change and development begins

This needs to be paired with external encouragement that fuels the burning fire

The “Before”: is a shell without content – A frame without a picture

The “After” is: is a finely tuned machine that has the ability to conquer new opportunities

A beautiful picture of wholeness and success

Below is a short video that outlines the transformation from “Before” to “After”

The Professional Coaching Process Explained

The ORID model is revolutionary and is the next step in the evolution of communication. This coaching model is a coach’s best friend because it identifies the correct process to enable the client to expand on their inner potential. Awareness and motivation are critical elements to seizing success in personal and professional encounters. We believe that there is no such thing as a dead-end and there is always a possibility to win when there is a present unstoppable will. Our clients overcome extreme adversity and we have the endurance to support against any odds. We implement strategic tools and logic to expand the field of view concerning all situations. The ORID provides a great system to improve communication between the coach and elite associate. Coaching skills such as active listening and powerful questions enable the professional coach to take this tool to a higher level and a lesser qualified coach would not be able to manage the above tool effectively.

The ORID diagram seems complex and difficult to interpret, but the following will explain the complicated terms in clearer detail. The O in ORID stands for observation which is code for understanding the background information concerning specific client situations. Background information is important for understand current and future situations. A qualified professional coach knows how to understand the content that is being communicated. There are hidden messages that a competent coach can pick up on and create awareness for their client. If done correctly, this feedback can be greatly influential in the client’s life.

The R in ORID stands for reflective which concerns understanding the feelings and emotions associated with the background information. A skilled coach will move effortlessly between these two categories and can maneuver back and forth gathering background information mixed with the associated feelings. The ORID box is extremely important because it identifies when discomfort is created – A lesser skilled coach will unknowingly create discomfort during the coaching process because they are unaware of the critical rules of communication. Trust is incredibly important when exploring feelings and emotions when supporting a client during this experience. Comfort and safety associated with privacy and confidentiality during the coaching process is essential in understanding all connected elements. True empathy is omnipotent in these situations and a born to be coach will posses this ability.

The I in ORID stands for Interpretive which concerns a full understanding of the previous two categories of O and R plus a focus on co-creating strategic solutions to improve current and future situations. A common mistake of inexperienced coaches is to cross the center and jump to decisions from feelings or from solutions back to background information. These jumps cause discomfort and skew the coaching relationship because mistrust is unconsciously created. When the coach has safely guided their client to the solutions stage there is a synergy that is growingly powerful. The momentum to overcome obstacles is fierce and the client begins to establish new growth that leads to greater accomplishment. This stage provides a clear-minded platform for expert brainstorming that magnifies client abilities to think strategically from multiple perspectives. The coaching feedback during this stage is extremely beneficial for the client because it signals that they are on the right page and reinforces their motivation to succeed – Sounds great huh.

The D in ORID stands for Decisions and this is the fourth category that has the task of capturing the momentum of the previous three categories. This is the mental arena where the client puts the optimum solution into practice and owns the process. This firmly empowers the client to take action in their lives to improve their position by making decisions that are free of false underlying beliefs that create arresting emotions that inhibit appropriate action. The coach guides the process and the client controls the content – The coach empowers the client through the coaching process and the client embraces the opportunity to reach their ultimate potential. An ongoing coaching engagement provides a constant platform for the client to interact with a professional coach. This provides the ability to reflect on progress or various factors that limit progressive action. This is a time to gain a deeper understanding about issues, circumstances, decisions, beliefs, and to brag about reaching previously unrealized goals faster than could possibly be conceived. This experience is what professional coaches live for and witnessing the development of clients is the greatest gift that the coach could receive.
