Leader Dilemma: Follower Fear and Future Uncertainty

People have needs. Needs are central to life. Unfulfilled needs create motivation and people are willing to do anything if their needs become extreme. What would you be willing to do for food or water if you were trapped in the desert? I bet you can’t imagine what you would truly do because it’s too scary.

We live in times of fear and uncertainty. Do all current situations create uncertainty? Were times uncertain 20 years ago? 50 years ago? 200 years ago? Humans are incapable of predicting the future. Did you know where you would be today – five (5) years ago? Think about it. How different was your prediction and your reality? You’re not alone.

Predicting tomorrow is a blind role of the dice at best, and the variables that are within our control are mostly ignored or treated with negligence. Unfortunately, our humanness directs us to make poor choices that change our future trajectory. We have two choices: either take responsibility for impulsive choices or blame others for the position we find ourselves in. The latter is the broadcasted voice because those voices are louder than ours. We choose to take responsibility because that is the only way forward.

People complain… A lot. “The squeaky wheel gets the oil.” In other words, people learn that if they complain, they will get a reward in exchange for their silence. People learn that complaining is a way to get others to provide for their needs. This creates a culture of negativity and entitlement. This slippery slope needs to be identified and handled properly before a point of no return is created. Can we trust the invisible hand concerning these devices? Laissez-faire leadership will not suffice and real changes need to be made to appease the public appeal. The million dollar questions are, what and how?

Why are the rich given all the benefits? Why should they have the finer things in life? We all believe that we should be rich and indulge in finer things. Well, all of us do deserve it. People should have the right to enjoy the utmost satisfaction available. The consequential catch is, we have to earn satisfaction or it has to be earned for us. Either we receive satisfaction as a gift or we have to use our unique human ability to think out solutions that create satisfaction.

Anyone could be within the 15% tax bracket if they really wanted it – All though it is easier for some than for others. There are more millionaires today than ever before. Some take action and some don’t. Some choose instant gratification and some delay. Choices have consequences and not everyone makes choices that support the long-term perspective. We should take responsibility, face reality, and take proper action (not everyone does). Those who don’t choose wisely, complain about what they don’t have, and what others have.

I have seen both sides of the financial equation and understand the struggle to escape the rat race… it can be done. People come from other countries, don’t know the language, postpone gratification, work hard, and become wealthy. Others are born wealthy. Regardless, in America, the opportunity exists. Success requires a relentless pursuit of knowledge, personal and professional development, and a positive mental attitude that develops solutions that impact long-term development.

It is human to fear the unknown and tomorrow is a statistical uncertainty. However, there is a solution. We control what happens tomorrow, with the choices we make today. Nevertheless, we do not control other’s actions. The existing culture and reward system dictate mass behavior and we look to our leaders for guidance. We look to our system for protection and security. We want to believe in our leaders and have faith that the greater good is their main objective and focus.

Our leaders are our representatives and need to conduct themselves with honor and dignity. America has a trust issue. Trust promotes development and lack of trust promotes a decline. We need our leaders to end the trail of deceit left by corrupt individuals who chose immediate gratification and damaged all preceding interconnected relationships.

Distancing the dishonorable actions of past leaders is the appropriate step in regaining public trust and overcoming uncertainty. Public leaders take on a greater responsibility and have more weight to bear because they’re a symbol of our self-identification. Unfortunately, public leaders will always be scrutinized regardless of genuine self-less leadership and need to be aware of the repercussions before accepting these incredibly stressful and fulfilling positions.

These valuable few leaders are not concerned with immediate gratification. Rather, their legends live on and their service to humanity is forever enshrined in stories told to future generations.

My writings are intended to raise awareness and enhance the lives we live. Half my life has been spent learning these insights and sharing is an attempt to improve and touch your life, the lives of others you touch, and on.

Strengths-Based Process: Leveraging Strengths for Success

We all have strengths – We all have weaknesses.

The common consensus is that we should improve our weaknesses to become more balanced and competent.  This misinformed belief leads people to become average. None of us are satisfied with average – there has to be another way to develop.

Yes, you need to be aware of your weaknesses and not allow them to inhibit your development.  Weaknesses need to be mitigated, but spending all of our time focusing on improving weaknesses is an exercise in futility.

We all have areas of weakness. There are several reasons for this and one reason is it is physically impossible to be perfect at everything. The best reason is that we do not mentally and physically enjoy doing the things we are weakest at doing and spend less time operating in those areas.  We avoid doing things that are unpleasant and we gravitate to doing the things that we enjoy the most. The things we enjoy doing the most become our strengths because we have more deliberate practice in these areas. Ultimately, we should concentrate on maximizing our strengths because we enjoy spending our energy and time focusing on these areas.

  • We have more to offer others when we express our strengths and cultivate our expertise.

Now that we have a mutual understanding on strengths and weaknesses; let me introduce you to the lever that enhances the strengths-based system.

There is an economic principle called competitive advantage.

It states that two competent people making two items each usually possess the ability to do one thing better than the other.  When each of them focuses on their strength – they can maximize their output in their best area.

Each person can produce more of one item when focused on doing only the thing they are best at doing instead of including their weaker skill. Each person has an abundance of one item and they need to fulfill the need provided by the item they did not create.

The key to unlocking the strength-based process is TRADE.

Trade creates wealth and Countries use this principle well.  Our civilization originated by using a bartering system which grew into a money system which is all based on the economic principle of competitive advantage. We as individuals can leverage this principle for our individual competitive advantage.

The prescription for implementation is:

  1. We need to identify our greatest strength.
  2. Develop this strength to be the best it can be.
  3. Find someone else who needs what we produce and has      something of importance that we are weak at producing.
  4. Trade services and create wealth for both parties.

A Win-Win Situation by leveraging the economic principle of Competitive Advantage for personal and professional development.

“Changing the Way the World Works”

There is Always a Solution

When all hope is lost there is still a solution.

There is never an end, but there is always a new beginning.

Are you willing to acknowledge alternatives and encounter the pain involved to travel the less traveled path?

Change is inevitable and accepting change is more difficult than change itself.

Identifying the solution is harder than proceeding.

The more opposition to change, the more pain involved in the process.

Accepting change provides satisfaction.

Let me leave you with a few chosen thoughts:

  1. If there is a will, there is a way.
  2. Nothing is impossible.
  3. It seems harder than it really is.
  4. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
  5. Figuring out what to do is the hard part, doing it is the easy part.

The world is full of endless possibilities – riches to those that search and find the possibilities that are right for them.

Strategy Demystified

The term strategy is widely used and applied to many processes and situations in which are not strategy. The concept of strategy is misused in many circumstances and not truly understood. Most people look like a deer in the headlights when “Strategy” is mentioned. The following is a quick and concise guide to understanding “Strategy”. The thought leader behind the following is Richard P. Rumelt and his book is “Good Strategy – Bad Strategy” and I highly recommended it.

“A good strategy honestly acknowledges the challenges being faced and provides an approach to overcoming them….Strategy selects the path, identifying how, why, and where leadership and determination are to be applied” – Richard P. Rumelt

There are three (3) elements of strategy:

  1. Diagnosing the challenge
  2. Guiding the policy
  3. Taking reasoned action
  • First you have to “define the challenge” in order to create a strategy.
  • The strategy has to be practical and has to address the critical issues instead of ignoring them.

Goals are not strategies – This is a common mistake so make sure you understand the difference.

Strategy defines the framework for taking action to meet goals” –Keith Lawrence Miller

Defining a strong strategy

  1. A strong strategy stands a strong chance of accomplishing its mission.
  2. A strong strategy builds strength through its design.
  3. A strong strategy applies strengths to the most promising opportunity.
  4. A strong strategy allows for mission pivots or timely adjustments to deal with new conflicting information.
  5. When creating a strategy, you always need to consider the competition.

Questions to Create a Strong Strategy

  1. What are the competitions strengths and weaknesses?
  2. What are our strengths and weaknesses?
  3. Where are the leverage points?
  4. Where are the opportunities?
  5. What are the risks involved?
  6. How can we put pressure on the competition to take away their focus from their strengths?
  7. What is the hidden power of the situation that neither side has identified?

“Leadership needs more than charisma and vision – Leadership needs a solid strategy” – Richard P. Rumelt and Keith Lawrence Miller (combined)

Why Goodwill is Priceless

Goodwill is derived from an accumulation of respect and the compounding effect can inadvertently change the world. Creating awareness within communities about having an abundant possession of goodwill promotes additional goodwill through the phenomenon of social proof, and an inherent human need to join a movement.  Goodwill promotes added commitment and can catapult an average leader into the ranks of the immortals.

Ten ways to acquire goodwill:

  1. Refrain from expressing a self-serving attitude
  2. Don’t be afraid to show others your human side
  3. Remove de-motivators from others perceptions
  4. Become an advocate for others desires
  5. Demonstrate daily adherence to your organization
  6. Become a role model for others
  7. Support charities
  8. Enable others to become difference makers
  9. Become a symbol of integrity by walking the talk
  10. Provide opportunities for development

Client-Centered Leadership

Rule #1 for successful client-centered leadership is to identify who are the clients. The common assumption is that business clients are customers, but the concept of client includes: vendors, employees, customers, board members, partnerships, media, and family. Satisfying everyone is an honorable achievement to strive for, but is usually impossible to sustain over time.

There has to be a framework for understanding the wants and needs of each client group in order to effectively promote successful business. Failing to support a link in the system could cause either temporary dysfunction or long-term damage that creates a tipping point of failure. Understanding the connections between clients and the impact they have on each other is essential to attending to needs.

Accomplishing a strong system of client-centered leadership will promote a cult-like following and commitment from clients. The system will advance to become self-sustaining for periods of time. The client-centered leader will need to attend to any needs in order to maintain system development.

The client-centered leader understands what is happening in the day-to-day interaction between client and business. The operation has to provide a win-win situation for both client and business in order to promote positive momentum for the system. Leadership is the core support for system development and leadership competence directly affects the organization ability to succeed. The increased responsibility is why industry leaders are rewarded with lofty compensation and their impact justifies the business allocation.

Executive Coaching directly impacts the ability to promote client-centered leadership by creating a customized framework around the individual leader’s traits and how they interact with the organization. Identifying solutions that target the discovered gaps with client disconnect and enabling the leader to address the immediate concerns to improve business processes.

New Leader – Team Communication Error: Problems and Solutions

Great individual performers who are promoted to leadership positions are used to producing superior results which are the reason for their promotion. These standout performers have customized frameworks set in place that guide their performance.  Their frameworks have taken years of development and their work experience and education has created a blueprint for success. As a new organizational leader, these company superstars’ job roles have changed. Now they need to rely on the work ethic of others to complete tasks and projects. They assume their job is to motivate a similar work production from their team members and this assumed inherent belief causes conflict.

The newly appointed leader tries to impose their work style on their team members because they have learned the most effective way for project success within the organization. A team member wants to use this information to leverage their ability to complete projects out of respect for their team leader and organization, but specific work styles are not always for everyone. The company as a whole wants prototypes of their new leader because of the superior gains realized through their company superstar’s individual performance. Everyone involved wants to meet this goal, but the internal structure cannot support the mission. Solutions are needed to avoid a domino effect of failure before it is too late.

Imposing the leader’s work style on team members has a way of backfiring, and causing internal conflict because people have different abilities and styles that are sometimes inflexible. This misalignment causes frustration, friction, and a lack of effective communication for everyone involved. Ultimately, the project suffers, employee’s turnoff, and the company superstar is now seen as an incompetent leader.

Leadership coaching removes the situational dilemma associated with leadership promotion by providing a framework for understanding different work styles and mediates the communication to improve the overall message. Usually, a new leader’s message gets lost in translation because of the emotional elements involved in these novel situations such as the transition to having enlarged responsibilities while at the same time having less control. The new leader has to understand the new territory of leadership and how to effectively navigate the controls by influencing team members to execute their style effectively to complete the project with excellence and on time. Leaders hold accountability, create a vision, communicate the mission, and inspire their team members to contribute their best. Leadership coaching provides the support system needed for new leaders to steer their team to success and create greater gains for their organizations sustainability. As you can see, the return on investment for leadership coaching is impressive when understood in the correct context.

The Blame Game

The basis of blame is called the Fundamental Attribution Theory. This theory describes the error involved in attributing blame and is a valuable asset for a leader’s knowledge base. The basic concept involves blaming mistakes that others make on their personality or individual qualities and the mistakes that we make are blamed on the situation. We give ourselves the benefit of the doubt but not others. This automatic reaction is human nature and the most seasoned and educated of us make this error in judgment.

The best of us recognize our false attribution as it occurs and make proper adjustments in order to be fair to others and to the situation at hand. Understanding that we make this critical mistake is important for leaders because they are solely responsible for influencing the actions and behaviors of their followers.  If the leaders insist on the continuation of this mistake then their team will follow their lead and create a culture of blame.

People make mistakes – some more than others – sometimes mistakes are the fault of individual qualities and other times it’s the situation that creates the error. We need to treat people how we would like to be treated – the blame game creates mistrust and dysfunction within teams. Leaders need to be able to decipher the difference between mistakes that are caused by the situation or individual qualities in order to be effective leaders.
