We all have the power of choice. Choice is an essential gift. We all make impulsive choices based on emotions paired with poor judgment. The choices we made yesterday have led to our present situation. We cannot go back in time and change what we did or how we did it.

We cannot dwell on something that cannot be changed. We need to focus on our choices today and how they will impact tomorrow.

We need to build positive momentum moving forward. Regardless if the economy is holding you down or your friends betrayed your trust. We could blame anything and everything for our situation, but that won’t help us move forward with positive momentum. We need to cut the dead weight of blame, collect the essential pieces that are left with us today, and start making choices that will make tomorrow a better place.

What one thing could you do that will create something positive for you tomorrow?

What do you want to happen in your future?

I heard a story about: scared money doesn’t win and it reminded me of brilliant people who preach – Give Back, Pay it Forward, What goes around comes around, Reciprocity, Karma.

Do favors for others that could do favors for you. When they say thank you, don’t say, “Don’t worry about it” or “No problem, anytime” [You’re discounting your favor].

You should instead say, “You would do the same for me”.

Try switching your language and watch the response. People have an inner need to repay favors because it makes us feel good. We want an opportunity to help back. Allow the people you take care of to take care of you too. Give and ye shall receive.

It’s human nature.

Affinity of Power

Power Introduction:

The concept of power is backed in research by David McClelland:

  1. Need for Power
  2. Need for Affiliation
  3. Need for Achievement

French & Raven’s 5 Bases of Power:

  1. Referent Power: Charismatic Leadership
  2. Legitimate Power: Formal Positional Leadership
  3. Expert Power: Knowledge-Based Leadership
  4. Reward Power: Transactional Leadership
  5. Coercive Power: Authoritative Leadership

*People seek to avoid Punishment & Strive for Rewards

Four Stages of Power

  1. Deriving Power from Others (i.e. Parents)
  2. Independent Powerfulness (i.e. Excessive Showiness)
  3. Helping Others (i.e. Executive Coach)
  4. Deriving Power from Higher Authority (Fortune 500 CEO)

The need for Power is universal basic need, but an excessive desire can and does lead to corruption.

This basic intro above is a precursor to opening new perspectives concerning the world around us…

We all Need Power – A Universal Human Need – Why is Power so Attractive?

  • Do we lack the Power we Desire?

Usually, and we strive through deliberate action to fulfill the need by way of the above 5 bases of power.

Lacking Power creates a Love of Rules to get Closer to Power because rules enable a power structure

  • Is there such an item as Ultimate Power?

Maybe, we would call it the creator of the universe but for humankind its not that simple.

  • If you had Complete Power, Would you be Corrupt? (i.e. Saddam Hussein)

The power to do whatever you please with whatever you want at any time and of Course we would all say, NO… but we are poor judgers of the future.

  • Is Not having Ultimate Power a Universal Law that Protects Humankind? (i.e. Law of Motion, Law of Gravity)

If so, this law is not explored at length as of yet.

  • Is Power as Conceptual as Time?

It exists whether we acknowledge it or not..

  • What is the Perception of Power? Is it Objective or Subjective?

Everyone has a different perception about the world around us based on our cultural values, education, environment, etc.

  • Is Power about Controlling or relinquishing Control? (i.e. Empowering Others)

True leadership and inner power concerns strategically relinquishing control, but unfortunately this pure perspective seems to be minimal when compared to the instinct to use Power to control through cohersion.

  • What is more important – External power or Internal power??
  • How can You Maximize Possession of Power without Hurting Anyone? (i.e. Senate vs. President) (checks and balance)

A very important question…

  • Who Controls the Perception of Power?

Maybe the perception of power is the truest form of power that goes undected because our cultural values tell us the system is created as just and whole to benefit our needs so the corrupt operations are accepted.

*Are we controlled by Institutional Power? (i.e. Parking Tickets, Taxes, etc…) “Control the people’s money and you control them”

Is Institutional Power Ethical? (Food for Thought)

Is the One who Controls the Perception of Power the Most Powerful?

Daily activities abide by rules governed by environment – Most are Man-Made to Control & Keep Order – Power Corrupts so it needs to be Monitored.

No one should have Ultimate Power because it will lead to destruction – Have you seen any movies lately concerning power?

Dictatorships in operation, from a distance, might seem fine and the people might justify the situation in order to have inner peace — but most of us know that this type of structure is inhumane and typically unfair to most.

Those who control the Perception of Power have the Ultimate Power over the Immediate Environment & the Human Need for this Power causes Institutional Struggles that have Reformulated Successful Societies over the Existence of Humankind – Have you read Machiavelli or 48 Laws of Power? Great books that are condemned because of the topic and style of writing, but if viewed through different lenses can provide great detail on how leadership and power operate in synchrony.

Fortunately, Ultimate Power does not exist – We all desire Power because it Creates a Sense of Self-Worth and a Sense of Control over the Environment. As Humans, we are Blessed with conscious awareness and the ability to perceive the Complexities of Power. Power is unseen and formed in our Collective Unconscious first described by Carl Jung. We are controlled by Power whether we like it or not. We hunger for the holy grail of power whether we acknowledge it or not and when in possession of expert, legitimate or any of the other types of power we should use this position for the greater good instead of greedy evil. Corrupt power at the highest levels of human hierarcharies have led to great destruction through world wars and financial collapse for centuries.  Abuse of power seems easier than applying this world changing ability of power control for the greater good because an inflated ego usually would reach for this perceived pinnacle of power through sheer motivation and dedication. Proper structures are necessary to prevent individualized power such as a board of directors, the United Nations, and the U.S. Senate.  These collective bodies prevent catastrophy when operated appropriately.

Power is Elusive – Power Controls – Power Dictates
